12-3-30 calorie calculator
Use this 12-3-30 calorie calculator to estimate a walk at 12% incline, 3 mph, and 30 minutes. Enter your body weight, then explore how a gentler grade or shorter session changes the estimate.

THE BIG PICTURE
Total calories include the energy you would use at rest during this time.
An estimate, not a measurement. See the method and limits below.
UNDERSTAND YOUR SESSION
What do 12, 3, and 30 mean?
The 12-3-30 workout is an incline walk: 12% treadmill grade, 3 miles per hour, and 30 minutes. The speed is about 4.83 km/h. Twelve percent is a slope ratio, not a 12-degree angle; it corresponds to roughly 6.8 degrees.
The preset starts with those three settings, but they remain editable. If you use a lower incline or a different duration, the result describes your adjusted session. A person weighing 70 kg gets an estimate of about 304 total kcal, or 267 active kcal, for the standard settings with the walking equation.
This is an estimate of workout energy, not a promise of fat loss. Holding the rails can substantially change the effort while the screen still shows the same grade. The model does not correct for that support.
A steep walk can be demanding even at a modest speed. Use settings you can sustain comfortably, and treat the calculator as a way to compare sessions. It does not assess whether the routine is suitable for you.
THE METHOD
Know what is behind your estimate.
We first estimate oxygen demand for the movement you choose, using belt speed and slope as inputs. Speed is converted to metres per minute, incline to a decimal grade, and weight to kilograms before calculation.
Walking: VO₂ = 0.1 × speed + 1.8 × speed × grade + 3.5
Running: VO₂ = 0.2 × speed + 0.9 × speed × grade + 3.5
kcal = VO₂ × weight ÷ 200 × minutes
VO₂ is in mL/kg/min. Net calories remove the 3.5 mL/kg/min resting term. The walking-pad tool instead uses speed bands from the 2024 Adult Compendium for level treadmill walking.
Useful estimates have limits.
These models assume steady movement. Walking equations are best suited to roughly 1.9–3.7 mph; the running equation is generally used from about 5 mph. Results outside those ranges need extra caution.
Handrail support, individual movement efficiency, treadmill calibration, and steep inclines can change the actual energy used. No automatic speed threshold changes your walking choice into running.
Pace is a speed conversion. Steps use your entered step length. Elevation is an equivalent vertical gain derived from grade and belt distance; you do not physically climb to that height on a stationary treadmill.

A FEW GOOD QUESTIONS
12-3-30 calorie calculator questions
How does the tool estimate 12-3-30 calories for my weight?
There is no fixed calorie count. Body weight affects the estimate, and actual energy use also depends on movement efficiency and support from the handrails. The weight field lets you calculate the routine with your own inputs rather than a published example.
Which metric speed matches the 12-3-30 preset?
No. Three mph is approximately 4.83 km/h. Switching this calculator to metric converts the current speed so you keep the same workout.
Can I change the 12-3-30 settings?
Yes. Adjust incline, speed, or minutes to compare a modified session. The result updates from the numbers you enter.
12-3-30 calories by weight and distance
The 12-3-30 workout calculator starts with 12% incline, 3 mph and 30 minutes. In km/h, the same speed is 4.828032, usually displayed as 4.83. At constant belt speed, the 12-3-30 distance is 1.5 miles, or about 2.41 km. The incline changes the modelled effort, not that belt distance.
| Body weight | Total calories | Active calories |
|---|---|---|
| 50 kg | 217 kcal | 191 kcal |
| 60 kg | 260 kcal | 229 kcal |
| 70 kg | 304 kcal | 267 kcal |
| 80 kg | 347 kcal | 305 kcal |
| 90 kg | 391 kcal | 343 kcal |
How many calories does 12-3-30 burn? In this model, the answer scales with the entered weight: 70 kg gives approximately 304 total kcal, while 90 kg gives about 391. These are calculation examples, not measured outcomes or guaranteed weight loss.
12-3-30 versus running and supported walking
A flat 6 mph run for the same 30 minutes gives about 375 total kcal at 70 kg. Comparing 12-3-30 versus running therefore means comparing the complete settings, not assuming one activity always burns more. Holding the rails changes the work you do; this model assumes walking without handrail support and does not apply an invented correction.
For 12-3-30 beginners, the preset is a reference rather than a required starting workout. A lower incline, shorter duration or different comfortable speed creates a different session, so edit those values and record the actual moving time. The beginner guide explains how to enter illustrative sessions.
