TREADMILL GUIDES
Treadmill calories by time, speed and incline
Explore treadmill calories by time, speed and incline with examples that share the same assumptions. Every row uses 70 kg body weight and total calories, so the comparisons have a consistent basis.
Read the assumptions before the numbers
These are outputs from the walking or running equation used by our calculator. They are not measurements from people completing the workouts. Total calories include the conventional resting allowance; active calories would be lower.
The walking rows use a walking movement selection. The running row uses running. Keeping that choice explicit prevents an arbitrary speed threshold from switching the calculation without your knowledge.
Compare treadmill calories by duration
At 3 mph, zero incline, and 70 kg, the walking estimate is approximately 61 kcal for 15 minutes, 121 kcal for 30 minutes, 182 kcal for 45 minutes, and 242 kcal for 60 minutes.
Within the same constant settings, time scales the model directly. Doubling the duration doubles the estimated session energy. That arithmetic does not mean everyone can comfortably sustain those settings for twice as long.
Compare treadmill calories by incline
For the same 30-minute walk at 3 mph and 70 kg, total estimates are approximately 121 kcal at 0%, 197 kcal at 5%, 273 kcal at 10%, and 304 kcal at 12% incline.
The grade term raises the estimated oxygen cost. Holding the handrails, changing your stride, or using an inaccurate incline display can make the real effort differ from those assumptions. Percent grade is not degrees.
Compare treadmill calories by movement and speed
A 30-minute flat run at 6 mph and 70 kg gives an estimate of approximately 375 total kcal with the running equation. The flat 3 mph walking example gives approximately 121 kcal.
Those rows change both speed and movement, so they illustrate complete sessions rather than isolating one cause. To isolate speed within the model, keep movement, weight, duration, and grade fixed while you change speed.
Replace the example weight with your own
The equation scales with entered body weight. These rows use 70 kg to make the examples consistent, not to suggest that everybody has the same calorie count.
Use the interactive treadmill calorie calculator for your settings. If you want a particular incline routine, open the 12-3-30 calculator. If your session varies over time, use interval segments rather than selecting one example row.
Keep the table in perspective
A workout calorie estimate is one piece of information. It does not include all of your daily energy use and cannot guarantee weight loss or a fitness outcome.
Use the examples to understand the calculation, then compare sessions using the same total or active calorie definition.

Treadmill calories by duration: 15 to 60 minutes
These treadmill calorie tables use 70 kg and total calories. The duration table keeps walking at 3 mph and 0% grade; it includes 20 minutes as well as the common 30-minute and one-hour treadmill sessions. Values are equation outputs rounded to whole kcal.
| Minutes | Total calories |
|---|---|
| 15 | 61 |
| 20 | 81 |
| 30 | 121 |
| 45 | 182 |
| 60 | 242 |
Treadmill calories by speed and incline
| Movement | Speed | Grade | 30-minute kcal |
|---|---|---|---|
| Walking | 3 mph | 0% | 121 |
| Walking | 3.5 mph | 0% | 135 |
| Walking | 4 mph | 0% | 149 |
| Walking | 3 mph | 5% | 197 |
| Walking | 3 mph | 10% | 273 |
| Walking | 3 mph | 12% | 304 |
| Running | 6 mph | 0% | 375 |
The 4 mph walking row is outside the tool’s usual walking-equation range, so interpret it cautiously. Ten or twelve percent incline means grade, not degrees. Do not compare a running row and walking row as if only speed changed.
How long to burn 300 or 500 calories on a treadmill?
Within constant settings, target minutes = target total calories ÷ estimated calories per minute. At 70 kg, 3 mph and zero incline, 300 total kcal takes about 74 minutes and 500 takes about 124. At 3 mph and 12% grade, the model gives about 30 and 49 minutes respectively. These are arithmetic projections, not recommendations to sustain those settings.
For treadmill calories per mile, divide total calories by belt distance; per kilometre, divide by kilometres. The flat 3 mph example is about 81 kcal per mile or 50 kcal per kilometre. Active-calorie targets use the lower active rate and therefore different times. Change weight and settings in the calculator rather than applying this table to everyone.
